Pretty much what it says on the tin: posts that haven’t been otherwise categorized.

Happy Equinox

Now that I’m out of school and working full time, the days and weeks tend to blend together. For instance: did you realize it’s already the last part of September? Where did the time go! And why the heck is if full dark by 7h30? Whose bright idea (no pun intended [this time]) was that, eh?

Oh right, the natural progression of the seasons. My bad.

Anyway, I just realized earlier today while checking the Astonomy Picture of the Day that today(ish) was the Autumn Equinox: the time of year when the length of the day and the night are approximately equal. And how better to illustrate that than with a video from SPAAAAAACE!

If you didn’t click that link, I’d strongly encourage you to do so. It’s a series of images captured from a geosynchronous satellite during last year’s autumn equinox. The day/night terminator passes through the north and south poles, and you can see the clouds progressing and the sun tracing along the equator. How cool is that!

Anyway, that was my astronomy nerd moment for the day, and totally wasn’t a cheap way to postpone the longer post I wrote until tomorrow when more people are likely to read it. Happy Equinox, and death to Daylight Saving Time!

Poached, Scrambled, Or Fried?

My brain is fried today.  I tried waiting until after work to write, but unfortunately I spent most of the day trying to bend CAD to my will.  So there’s not going to be much of a post today.

I’ve got a project I’m working on, and the scope seems to be expanding as time goes on.  At first, I thought I’d just have to take an existing CAD file and put it into our office’s title block.  But then I started noticing things that needed fixed.  So I fixed them.  But then I started noticing data that was missing or incomplete.  So I tried to fix that too.

Long story short, this project is taking me longer that it probably should.  On top of that, I can’t help but feel I’m making more work for myself, most likely through misunderstanding the scope of work.  My boss(?) thought it should take no more than a week; now it’s looking more like two.

Oh well.  I’m not being hounded about it yet, so hopefully there isn’t a problem.  There’s only so fast I can work on this sort of thing before my brain starts leaking out my ears.

So instead I’m going to go hit my friends with sticks.

No Post Today, Obviously

As the title says, I didn’t get anything written today.  I’ve crashed my blood sugar twice in as many days, and I just wasn’t feeling it this morning.  Plus, I’ve got Battlemoor to put off preparing for.

Bad ADD Day

Have you ever had one of those days? You know the kind. The ones where no matter what you do you just can’t seem to get going. Where you sit down to do something productive and the next thing you know it’s three hours later and while you haven’t started that project, you’re pretty sure you’re as caught up as you can be on your social media feeds. But you’d better check one more time to be sure.

Guess what happened to me today!

Yeah, this blog post is later than usual. I’m also feeling pretty fried, so it’s not going to be super deep or anything, either. Turns out running around and hitting people with sticks at 9,000 feet really does a number on you for the next day.

But, I told myself I’d blog daily. I’m just taking the easy way out again, and writing about how I don’t have the energy to write. Notice, though, that I am still writing. And that does count for something, at least in my mind. And since this is my blog, my mind is the only one that matters. Besides, better late than never.

So yeah. I’m tired, more than a little punchy on Facebook, and feeling the urge to start watching a new series on Netflix. How are you?

I was planning on writing a third post about burnout today, but I’m just not feeling it. I’m tired, my mind is foggy, and the weather is being weird. I’ve got no drive to do anything. And oh yeah, there’s an event this weekend to get ready for. Assuming it doesn’t get rained/hailed/tornadoed out.

So let’s talk random!

Godzilla was a fun movie. A bit too much “human interest,” as my girlfriend put it, but not nearly as bad as the recent Transformers movies have been. Godzilla showed up, looked and sounded like Godzilla, and proceeded to lay the atomic smackdown on interposing environs and creatures. We may not have been the only ones cheering in the theater for Godzilla, but we definitely started it. Kinda made me want to see Pacific Rim again, in a good way.

Why am I so tired? Well, because I’m having to work seven days in a row to get the weekend off, and I’m on day six. I keep getting asked to stay for longer shifts, and like a good little retail cog-monkey who wouldn’t mind the extra cash, I’ve been doing so. Not sure how much I’ll be up for this weekend as a result. I even skipped fighter practice this week, even knowing I would have to miss next week’s too because of work. Although given the day I had on Thursday, I would have really like the chance to hit something. Hard.

Q: How many kids with ADD does it take to screw in a light bulb?

For something I didn’t get into until very recently, I find myself spending more and more time on Tumblr. Seriously: I end up checking my feed multiple times a day, trying to make sure I see everything. I used to do the same on Facebook, but for some reason that’s grabbing my interest less these days. I’m gonna blame Facebook’s news feed not defaulting to a “most recent” view.

I was gonna write about something else, and I’ve completely forgotten what it was.

I keep coming across GIFs and screencaps from Firefly and Serenity lately, and it’s really making me want to re-watch the series. It’s also making me really sad there wasn’t more of the series. And sad for Wash. Did you know I have one of his Hawaiian shirts? I first came across the series while I was studying abroad in France. I’ll admit to downloading the episodes, but I bought them all on DVD once I got back to the states. It was is just that shiny.

A: LET’S GO RIDE BIKES!

You Can Probably Skip This

And just like that, after two heavy, cerebral posts, I can’t think of anything to write about. I’m pretty sure I had ideas earlier in the day, but the fact that I’ve waited until the last possible moment to write before I need to head to practice means I won’t be able to put much thought into things.

That’s an odd Catch-22, isn’t it? I have things I want to write about, but I want to do it well (read: perfect), so I don’t write about them. Instead, I think about writing them, and this feel a small sense of accomplishment for not doing anything. Go me.

I used this strategy against my perfectionism a lot in school: if I waited until the last minute to do my homework, who could blame me if it wasn’t perfect? Not me, that’s for sure. A part of me has always wondered if I would have done any better in school if I had actually taken the time others suggested. That’s not to say I did poorly; I’m just woolgathering over might-have-beens.

And today wasn’t exactly a day to instill motivation to write, anyway. For the first time in a while, like last week, I had two days off in a row. However, this week I didn’t have anything I particularly needed to accomplish. So what did I do? I slept in, puttered about on the Web, played some video games, and even chipped away at my Netflix queue. In other words, a whole lot of nothing.

I even got bored! That’s not a common feeling for me these days; usually I’m too exhausted/stressed/whatever to feel much of anything once I accomplish what I need to. But lo and behold, I actually managed to complain (at least to myself) about “nothing to do.”

But hey, I promised a post a day, and I want to hold up my end of the deal. I did get two posts written yesterday, so I finally have a small buffer again. It would have been so easy to just let today’s commitment slide, but no. So instead of nothing posted, you get a post about nothing.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go hit my friends with sticks.

I Need Sleep

So yeah, in answer to the question posed by my last post. I am, indeed, quite tired. Working late kicked my butt as much as I expected, and even going back to early mornings for the past two days was tough. For some reason, someone thought it would be a great idea for the skinny guy with no thermal mass to go crawling around in the giant freezer and milk cooler.

Let’s just say I was less than thrilled.

But getting this tired wasn’t completely bad (I realized that may sound a lot dirtier than I meant, but bear with me). Sunday, I had the chance to go to a friend’s Nerf party. What’s a Nerf party, you may ask? Well, it’s better than a Tupperware party, I can assure you. It involves getting a bunch of people together, a couple barrels of foam darts, and more tubs than you can carry with plastic launchers for said darts. Then, you use the aforementioned darts and launch them at the aforementioned people.

The theme was suitably nerdy: Redshirts (Star Trek) vs. Stormtroopers (Star Wars). That is to say, people who can’t hit anything against people who end up dying anyway. We even had a bunch of cardboard boxes to use as terrain.

It was a ton of fun. We had done something similar last year, but without a unifying theme or anywhere near as many structured scenarios. People really got into it, and I was even able to drag my brother out of his post-sportsball-defeat stupor to come and have a good time. We ended up being on the same team (Star Wars, if you must know), but that didn’t stop us from shooting each other occasionally.

It was a ton of fun, and I think everyone that showed up had a great time. As things progressed, you could see strategies starting to form beyond just “wade in like Rambo Deadpool, firing indiscriminately.” And of course, there were a few minor hiccups with rules and intensity (one team seemed more aggressive than the other, and it can be hard to read whether or not a foam dart hit you), but for the most part it was nice and friendly. Although it was amusing how the “I shot you!” “No you didn’t!” dynamic holds just as true whether you’re twelve or twenty.

Who Needs Sleep?

One of the annoying things about working retail is the lack of a fixed schedule. I know I’ve written about this before, but it’s come up to bother me yet again.

Having no regular days off makes it really hard to plan non-work activities. For instance: I can’t decide on a whim to go to an SCA event, or spontaneously hang out with friends later in the week. I have to plan, but I can’t plan more than a week out in advance. Luckily, working early mornings has given me plenty of downtime in the afternoons to generally slack off or “get stuff done.”

And I’ve pretty much gotten used to waking up at 4 in the morning; it sucks, but at least it’s a consistent schedule I can get used to. In the past, I’ve had weeks where my shifts can vary from mid-day to closing (mostly closing). Since what socializing I do get around to is mostly done with friends who have more typical 9-to-5 schedules, working evenings cut into that time a lot more than I liked. Sure, early mornings get to you after a while, but at least they’re consistent.

But this week is inventory week, which means it’s all sorts of weird. Like today: they’ve taken a bunch of people who are used to starting work at 5am and having them work until 11h30 at night. Which is about two hours later than I’m usually asleep. I can see what they’re trying to do: they’re trying to get everything they need to done tonight so they can have their usual morning people come in Saturday night for the count. But I can’t help but think that they won’t get the best quality of work out of people who are dead tired.

Oh, and Saturday? I work another evening shift until 9pm, and then have to be at work at 5am the next day. That’s technically eight hours between shifts…

I realize I haven’t said anything truly deep or meaningful here. But every once in a while it can be good to just rant for a bit. I’ll spare you the drama llama GIF.

This time…

SPAMSPLOSION

While I’m feeling (much) better, my wetware is still a little fried from overheating.  But not one to deprive you of entertainment (or myself of meeting an arbitrary posting goal), I thought I’d share a recent spam comment I received on this blog.  I get some interesting stuff, sometimes in Russian, but this one really stood out for how generic it was:

How funny is that?  I’m guessing someone’s “natural” language parser had the equivalent of explosive diarrhea (ew), because there’s over 2700 more words like that.  I won’t subject you to the rest, but hopefully this brightens your day a bit.

Blargh

Not much of a post today.  I finally came down with the “2-week cold in two days” my girlfriend was oh-so-nice in bringing back from her recent train trip.  I even had to (finally) call in sick to work for the first time since I started. But the fevers seem to be mostly gone now; I’m feeling better, but am still a bit out of it.  So I’m gonna just spend the day recuperating by surfing the Internet and watching Netflix.
